By 1906 manufacturers everywhere were making the "Roosevelt Bears" and everyone wanted one. President Roosevelt even used one as a mascot in his bid for re-election.
At first, the bears resembled real bear. Over time, however, they became more cuddly looking and cartoonish in nature. These days they're softer and plusher. The teddy bear has become an icon and symbol for childhood and has been celebrated in film, song, dance, commercials, and cartoons.
