There are a wide variety of sports activities and methods by which persons earn their livelihood at various times. A few of these acts are performed on solid earth, while others are confined to large areas of water, for example, seas. The activities in the sea can involve sea life, thereby paving the way for Key West tarpon fishing.

Tarpons are considered large prehistoric fish, whose sides may be silver or brown, depending on their surroundings. Their scales and mouths are considered huge, and the tarpons possess a bone structure that is heavy and points upward. Favoring shallow water, tarpons have lungs which enable them to take in oxygen outside of water.

It would seem that as far as this sporting activity is concerned, both location and fish are a perfect match. It is believed that tarpons give fisher folk much thrill, because they fight back, thus generating acrobatic runs that pound the hearts and wrench the guts of participants. Such a spectacle is one worth seeing in the shallow, warm water enjoyed by the living and spawning fish.

Various methods are used in attempting to catch this fish in the sporting event. For example, there is light tackling which involves a live crab and a rod. In this activity, a live crab is placed on a spinning rod and thrown to a school of tarpons which mercilessly tackles it, thereby producing a thrilling show.

Fly fishing can also be thrilling, particularly for fishermen who are good at angling, and are willing to start early. The general feeling is that the intensity of the fish is able to test the character of the angler, along with his gear. Anglers with experience feel that the way the sporting boat is positioned makes a difference in how the fly is offered to the fish, because the fisher needs to go inside the fish mind and think like a fish.

The very equipment that is needed for this fish has to be special. For instance, a valuable rod needs to be in a specific weight range, and its matching reel requires good backing. Additionally, the leader system manufactured from fluorocarbons, the shock tippet, and the floating weight, all play their part in the casting technique called double haul.

The location is full of experienced anglers with certification as captains, who readily act as guides. They are so enthusiastic that they willingly accommodate sporting novices, gladly sharing their knowledge and passing on their expertise for reeling in the tarpons. The expert craftsmen even go to great lengths to provide very high quality fly rods and spinning tackles as needed.

Key West tarpon fishing appears to be a well established, interesting, and enjoyable sport. This activity tends to provide a thrilling experience for anglers with some amount of expertise. Not to be overlooked, though, are novices to the sport, who are able to learn from enthusiastic guides.
