Boating holidays in France are extremely popular. The country has a lot to offer the tourist from incredible national parks to internationally renowned cities and, of course some of the best cuisine. A barge trip France is a wonderful way to experience all that the country has to offer as you sail around your chosen region with the freedom to stop and see whatever you like.

There are around one hundred canals throughout the country. In the north you can even enjoy the capital city, Paris from a canal boat. The southern regions are famous for their superb vineyards and ancients village and towns.

The most popular is the Canal du Midi in the south. The canal itself is a World Heritage Site and boasts some of the most incredible locks, tunnels and bridges. It is famous for the hundreds of miles of tree lined waterway. They were planted to help preserve the embankments and now give the canal its unique, beautiful appearance.

Along the Midi there are other World Heritage Sites such as Carcassonne, a Thirteenth Century fortification which is beautifully preserved. There are also Roman towns such as Beziers where you can visit ancient ruins. If you are interested in that popular French tradition of wine growing there are three regions to encounter along the Canal du Midi. Just like all the waterways in France there are lots of activities for all the family from adventure sports, to hiking, cooking and history.

French food is internationally renowned for its fantastic ingredients and as the birthplace of the main cooking techniques. Barge holidays offer the chance to experience the cuisine from all angles. You can moor in towns and cities to experience the best modern restaurants, stop in the countryside for some real regional cuisine or buy fantastic ingredients to cook yourself.

There are two basic types of barge trip, charter or cruise. Hiring in a cabin in a cruise boat is extremely popular and the ultimate in relaxation as there is a top class crew tending all your needs. However for freedom and adventure you cannot beat a charter boat.

Whichever option you choose you will find excellent, modern facilities on board. These boats are built for comfort and will feel like a second home. Charter boats have everything you need to live comfortably such as a modern kitchen with cooker and crockery, comfortable cabins and bathrooms with warm showers.

Being the skipper of your own canal boat is easy and you do not even need a licence. The rules of the waterways are pretty simple, nobody is going anywhere at high speeds. When you collect the boat the travel company will ensure you get a thorough briefing on how to pilot and maintain it. Many of the locks you will encounter are operated by trained staff who will guide you through.

There is lots of information about barge trip France on the internet. You can take a virtual tour of the boats and check out all the tourist attractions along the canals. The only difficulty is choosing just one from the amazing range of trips on offer.
