The Religious Side of San Jose

San Jose, CA was set up in Nov of 1777 as Pueblo de San Jose. The city was initially built as a farm to support the Spanish army, but later turned into the state capital when California became a state in 1850. It's a town rich with history and some of the prettiest landmarks are those with a spiritual nature. Most of the churches in the area have a rich past, but 1 or 2 date back to California's start. When visiting, one should try to visit the religious landmarks in San Jose. Here listed are just a few of San Jose religious landmarks.

Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph

Just outside the South Market lays the St. Joseph Cathedral, which is amongst the religious sites in San Jose, CA. This church was originally created in 1803; however it has been reconstructed many times. The first adobe structure was damaged by quakes; the second was ruined by the 1868 Hayward tremor. The third attempt was annihilated by a fire and the fourth was only a short lived building. Finally in 1884, the Cathedral was reconstructed and is still operational today. It's the oldest parish in San Jose. It is best famous for its fantastic artistic endeavors.

San Jose Betsuin Buddhist Church

In the guts of San Jose, CA lays a pretty Buddhist church. The San Jose Betsuin Buddhist Church is the Temple of the Jodo Shinshu Nishi Hongwanji convention and was set up in 1902. They host conventional Japanese holidays and serve Japanese cuisine. It's a San Jose spiritual landmark due to their festivals and continuing services.

Mission San Jose

The Mission San Jose was founded in June of 1797 and fully restored in 1985, making it one of the oldest religious landmarks in San Jose. It's the location of the first Caesarian section birth, C-Section, in Alta California. Even though the church has been revived to be tremor stable, many say it is an exact duplicate of the original mission. The mission was set up by Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen as a way to teach the natives Christianity and the Spanish life.

Statue of Jesus Christ

In front of Cathedral of Trust in San Jose, lying in a beautiful bush is a statue of Jesus Christ with his hands outstretched. Under the statue is the quote "Come to me, all you who are tired and encumbered, and I am going to give you rest." The quote is from St Matthew 11:28 in the new testament of the Bible. This beautiful statue is a great religious site in San Jose to go to visit thanks to the peace and tranquillity it brings.First Unitarian Church of San JoseWith just one hundred folks attending, Unitarian services commenced in San Jose in 1865. The First Unitarian Church of San Jose is a ground-breaking building due to its aid in the women's suffrage movement and helping victims of the Civil War. The church was really built in 1892, over twenty five years after services first started.
